Sunderland continue their good form against Oxford with a 1-0 with at the Kassam Stadium in challenging conditions.
A run of 1 defeat in the last 12 games, including 7 wins from the last 10, has seen Sunderland climb from the lowest league position in their 141 year history to be right in the automatic promotion mix in League One this season. While many fans will see this as the absolute minimum, it is far cry from Boxing Day where the Stadium of light was a toxic atmosphere.
Sunderland now sit three points behind joint leaders Coventry and Rotherham with their sights firmly set on a top two finish. Phil
Parkinson keeps faith with the same team, despite calls from some quarters to rotate and rest players, however sticking with the winning formula is working for the time being. The promising sign for Sunderland, unlike earlier in the season, if things do start to go wrong there are options waiting to come into the team. The current form has also allowed the new signings time to settle in before being thrust into the first team, something which can only help Sunderland coming towards the end of the season.
With players like Lafferty, Watmore, Scowen and Semenyo all waiting to step into the team should form or fitness drop for those currently in the starting XI. It is a strength that no other team in the League can boast.
Hope and expectation is high on Wearside for a return to the Championship, where the hard work would begin again, with some serious recruitment needed to compete at that level. Let’s hope that Sunderland’s well documented scouting issues are now fixed and a solid scouting program in place.
