Anthony Joshua scores and impressive and comprehensive points victory against Andy Ruiz Jr in Saudi Arabia last night.
Throughout the fight Joshua looked assured, fighting at range, keeping the shorter and heavier fighter out of reach of a potential knock out blow. Joshua’s performance showed a realisation that he must still work hard to achieve his goals, with the gulf in class throughout the fight showing that Joshua was not focussed on the first bout. With talk of a third fight, it is hard to see any other outcome than a Joshua win again as long as he maintains his focus.
Ruiz Jr has states after the fight that he didn’t train properly and that for a rematch he would do so, but it is difficult to understand how a fighter can not be in the absolute prime for their first title defence. A victory here would confirm that Ruiz Jr is a genuine top level fighter, but the manner of the defeat shows that he is just shy of being a world class fighter than can compete with the Likes of Joshua, Wilder, Fury and Ortiz.
It would be very surprising if there was a third instalment, certainly straight away, with Joshua like to move onto bigger targets. Surely a fight against the winner of the potential Wilder Fury bout must be next for Joshua.
